About This Production
Author's note
On the South Devon Coast path between Slapton Sands & Start Point lie the ruins of Old Hallsands. The story of its collapse has been told many times: an unfortunate accident, an act of folly, or so I believed until I found a long-concealed Government document in the Public Records Office in Kew. My research eventually led me to write Hallsands: a Village Betrayed, published in 2002.
Shifting Sands is a fictional story spun around those real events. Tom and Edith are entirely fictional. George Wills, Mrs. Spital, Hansford Worth, Jim Trout and Mr Brooks are real people. The Inspector, the Official and Munro are amalgams of real people. When Munro and the Official speak from their desks they are using the actual words of journalists and officials at the time.
Backstage gossip
The poster for this production inadvertently caused a bit of a stir: perhaps the difference between the letters 'f' and 't' in the title would have been clearer in a different font.
