Reviews and Cuttings

From the Totnes Times of January 3, 1931

Mr Arthur Manning’s Boxing Day entertainment proved a great success. The first part consisted of an operetta 'The Dolls’ Hospital', rendered by the children. The principal parts were taken by Miss Doris Manning (Fairy Silver Chime) and Miss Joan Cole (Sailor Doll). The song ‘Remember the doll-less children’ was prettily sung by Miss M Catt. Miss D Manning was excellent throughout the operetta, also Miss Cole in her rendering of the ‘Sailors Hornpipe ‘. About forty children took part.

The sketch ‘My turn next’ was very amusing, those taking part being Mrs Gardner, Mrs Tucker, Miss D Manning, Miss L Chapel, Master R Shute, Master E Pinhey and Master F Moores. The entertainment concluded with a bright musical programme by ‘The Costume Concert Party’, the outstanding items being a tambourine dance by Mrs Gardiner and Miss L Chapel; a song ‘Cheer up and smile’ by Miss M Chulke; and a toe-dance by Miss Chapel. Mr Manning’s orchestra played during the intervals. Mrs G Briggs the accompanist was responsible for the greater part of training the children. A dance followed and was well attended. Music was supplied by Mr Manning’s Dance Orchestra.
