Reviews and Cuttings

On Thursday night South Brent Amateur Dramatics Society produced ‘Devonshire Cream’, their second big performance.

This enterprising band of the village actors and actresses could not have chosen more wisely than this comedy by Mr Eden Philpotts in the Devonshire dialect, which they know so well.

Mr HG Symons had an important role as a Elias Widecombe, the farmer who refuses to forget an ancient feud, and he made the most of it. Both his gestures and intonation were delightful. A charming study of his wife was given by Mrs Walter Hard, who played with restraint and dignity. Miss V Manning, who took the part of the daughter, and Mr Stanley Jefford, who played opposite her, filled their parts with great credit.

A great deal of the humour in the play was provided by Mr Charles Manning as Billy Blee, Mr E Mitchell, the cowman, and Miss Molly Cole, the dairymaid.

The action of the play was well sustained throughout and the audience did not have a dull moment. Being a Devon audience they were, of course, in the position of being able to appreciate especially the dry Devon jokes. Credit is due to the producer, Mrs GL Hodson, who had welded her cast into a harmonious whole. Mr HG Symons, besides playing one of the principal parts, was stage manager and also assisted Mrs C Rakes with the scenery. Mrs B Hawke and Miss D Luscombe were responsible for the costumes and Messers W Hard and S Sparkes for the lighting effects. The pianist was Mrs E Catt. Capt. DS Carnochan is the Chairman of the society and Mrs AJ Vickery the Secretary. The performance will be repeated this Friday evening.
